According to the Fall Prevention Center of Excellence, this week is designated as Fall Prevention Awareness Week. The CDC states that more than 1/3 of all adults over the age of 65 fall at least once a year. Many of them have fallen more than once. The good news is there are many simple things you can do to prevent.
- Exercise – not only does this promote better health it also improves coordination and balance which can prevent falls.
- De-clutter – Make sure your house is clear of obstructions and remove any tripping hazards like loose rugs especially in the bedrooms and bathrooms.
- Medications – Be sure to take any medications as prescribed. Forgetting to take prescribed medications may cause dangerous side effects like dizziness or worse, any of which could help facilitate a fall.
Not every fall can be prevented. This is why an emergency response system like the MediPendant can help you when you need it. Being prepared can mean getting help in minutes vs. hours and could save your life.
